I'm a new player to WH40K. I started playing in June for the first time and I picked Necrons as my first army. I enjoy playing them, but feel somewhat limited due to the fact that their troops (Warriors and Immortals) come in standard with no real customization. Immortals can swap out gauss for tesla weapons, but it has to be the entire unit.
After looking around a bit, I see that Imperial Guard are similar to Necrons in how they're a very shooty-type army, but allow more customization and various formations.
My worry is that if I invest into Imperial Guard, I'll be stuck with two very shooty-type armies. Necrons slowly plod forward and shoot, while IG dig in and shoot.
Opinions? Thoughts?

compromise and get Space Marines, best of both worlds, and i'm a new player too and like the SMs.

I would recommend the CSM for your illness!
It allows you to have some extremely solid choices for both fields of battle.
You can have the Khorne Berserkers as one of the most devastating Hand-to-hand units in the game.
Or you can go with Thousands suns, which are essentially space marines with a 4++ save and AP3 bolters.
But if you don't want to play CSM, and just want to stick with the two armies you mentioned, the Necrons would be the better choice, as their hand-to-hand fighting can be quite deadly.

I recommend you stick with Necrons. Everyone, especially when you first start, has the grass is greener-itis. Necrons don't have very exciting troop choices, but that's where that problem ends. They really are just simple core of your army with which you can do all kinds of wild things to compliment. Want to go with a super fast Necron air force? Speedy, nasty wraith-wing? Doomsday heavy hitters? Tons of bodies? Spiders? Scarabs? Destroyers? On it goes.
Space Marines? They're just as bad if not worse on troop options. Tac marines or scouts...
I agree that chaos space marines give you a ton of troop options (a TON), I just don't feel like they give you a ton of *viable* troop options, but if you're not going for super competitive than absolutely, they have troop options galore.
And yes, while IG have more flexibility with their troop choices, it's really not much different than "do I want vanilla IG or veterans?" It's still the same guy x410941 on the board.
In the end play what you want, it's too expensive of a hobby to buy something and 6 months later regret it. Also keep in mind IG are bloody expensive. I personally think Necrons are a great starter army because they're relatively inexpensive, they're very fun and easy to paint / base, and they're among the top armies on the power curve. Plus you already have some. You can always pick IG up later as a 2nd army.

Ah, I too am a Necrons kinda guy, and when I get my 2nd army going I am looking at the IG, because they are humans and they aren't space marines haha. and it's nice to see that in 30 thousand years humanity is still going strong and not backing down no matter the opposition.
I like the necrons for that very reason, they are simple, and it helps at to the unified soullessness of them. and you can still come up with a lot of fluff for them, you can be an army that already exists or pick an unknown tomb world and go from there.
